2008.06.11-12 Brookings Institution & Google.org Plug-In Conference
A FOREIGN POLICY EVENT
Plug-In Electric Vehicles 2008: What Role for Washington? Sponsored by the Brookings Institution and Google.org
Energy Security, Climate Change, Energy, Environment, Technology
EVENT SUMMARY
Oil prices are at record highs. The overwhelming dependence of our cars and trucks on oil strains family budgets, threatens our national security and contributes to global warming. Plug-in electric vehicles have the potential to significantly reduce the United States’ dependence on oil. Yet can this potential be realized? If so, how? Is there a national interest in putting millions of plug-in vehicles on the road soon? How should policymakers in Washington, D.C., respond?

On June 11 and 12, the Brookings Institution and Google's RechargeIT.org hosted a Plug-In conference in Washington D.C. titled “Plug-in Electric Vehicles 2008: What Role for Washington?” The conference placed a spotlight on plug-in electric vehicles, examining their potential, their viability, and the pros and cons of different federal policies to promote them.

To supplement the conference Google's RechargeIT.org placed a call for videos on "Why I Want to Drive a Plug-In". Several of these Plug-In videos were played throughout the two day conference and you can view many of the Plug-In videos here. Alexandra's and my "Power of Electric" video submission was selected to open the conference and can be seen in the first few minutes of the first hour of the Plug-In conference webcast archive below.

Plug-In Conference Webcast Video Archives
There were approximately 8 hours of live webcast of the Plug-In conference spread across both days (five hours on Day 1 and three hours on Day 2). Live webcasts are notoriously difficult to view both from the realtime commitment and the occasional audio and video dropouts due to Internet traffic and bandwidth issues. The below archive represents better than 99% of the entire live webcast. My connection sufferred only a few minor connection dropouts during hour 2 and hour 3 of day one, and a 2 minute dropout on hour 3 of day two.
