Honda 2000 Insight Hybrid
This evening (Feb 24, 2000) I visited Kolbe Honda with a friend to take a look at the excellent new Honda Insight gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle. It uses Honda's innovative Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) which couples a 10KW electric motor with a 1.0 liter 3-cylinder engine allowing it to be classified as an Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV). The electric motor is only energized during acceleration. At a stop with the transmission in neutral and the clutch disengaged the motor shuts off to save fuel. The unibody chassis is constructed of aluminum similar to the Acura NSX. Careful attention to weight saving measures allows the vehicle to tip the scales at approximately 1800lbs. The vehicle can obtain upwards of 70+ mpg giving it a range of over 700 miles on its 10.6 gallon fuel tank. I took the opportunity to take a few pictures of this "Year 2000 CRX". It's extremely exciting to see Honda bringing back a design very similar to the original CRX but updated with a very innovative propulsion system.
Check out the Insight at Honda's website.

The Insight is available in one of the following colors: Silverstone Metallic, Citrus Yellow Metallic, or New Formula Red

On January 12, 2000 I visited the Los Angeles Auto Show where they displayed a Silverstone Metallic Insight.
The vehicle officially debuted on December 15th, 1999.
