The new Flat Panel iMac
Saturday, April 6, 2002 the Northridge Apple Store received its first shipment of lowend $1399 new Flat Panel iMacs! I had been waiting for a couple of months for these new iMacs to become available. I rushed down to pickup 4 of these marvelous gems before they disappeared. I am using these new iMacs as new OS X based CGatePro mail servers, OS X based DNS server, and Retrospect 5 OS X network backup server! These new iMacs are a perfect low cost solution for supporting distributed server functions in a small business. By distributing network services among several machines one can minimize the downtime of services to users if a server requires maintenance or attention. Bundling all services into one machine results in unavability of all services (mail, DNS, backup, filesharing, etc...) if that one machine fails or requires attention. Downtime costs much more to a company in lost productivity than the hardware cost of multiple computers to provide distributed network services. The new iMacs also add excellent style to any server room!
